Greetings everyone,
The director of the SIT program in Chile will be on campus on Friday 17 February, and we are able to take advantage of his presence to have him give a brown bag for us. Please invite your students to Victor Tricot's talk at noon in Wyatt 326.
Chile has usually been characterized by the political science literature as a high quality democracy, being used as a model of development and institutional strength. However, during the last year the country has witnessed the emergence of the biggest social movement seen in democracy. The student social movement has not only questioned the educational system, but it has also shown the weakness of an institutional model that disregards civil society participation. This presentation intends to seek some preliminary answers as regards this ongoing social phenomenon, analyzing the institutional factors (constraints) that may have contributed to the current wave of social discontent.
Thanks,
Rachel
