State Department Internships

Hello:
We are now accepting applications for the U.S. Department of State 2014 Spring Student Internship Program (unpaid).

This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in10-week, unpaid internships that provide intensive educational and professional experience within the environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency.
The unpaid internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S. embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand, hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with – Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of America’s diplomatic efforts.
As an unpaid intern, you may have the opportunity to:
  • Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;
  • Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives;
  • Help organize and support events, including international and/or multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;
  • Contribute to the management and administration of the Department of State and America’s foreign policy; and
  • Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S. foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.
So consider spending your Fall 2013 with the U.S. Department of State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S. diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy initiatives. You’ll not only have an experience of a lifetime, you may even earn educational credit.*

Students for a Sustainable Campus present: The Island President

Join us for a national day of action focused around political corruption and climate stalemate. On April 17th, be part of a nationwide screening of the powerful film The Island President – "as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable." The film will be followed by a national webinar with the Director, Jon Shenk, Former UN Deputy Permanent Representative to the Maldives, Thilmeeza Hussain, and May Boeve, head of 350.org, and is sponsored by C2C Fellows and the Bard Center for Environmental Policy.

The Island President links the struggle for democracy and human rights with the fight to stabilize the climate. This is the exact challenge facing us right here in the United States. Billons of dollars in fossil fuel money is corrupting our democracy and poisoning the future.

Come see the Island President free in Trimble on April 17th at 7 pm to support 350.org’s “fossil free” divestment campaign that is taking on the fossil fuel companies, and to learn more about the fight for a sustainable future in the Maldives.

Internships!? Congressman Derek Kilmer's Tacoma Office Wants You....

The new local member of Congress, Derek Kilmer from Washington's Sixth District, is seeking interns to help staff the local office.  Nicholas Carr, the local internship coordinator, is seeking students with junior or senior status to commit to working in the local office.  The work will involve research and involvement in the grants process as well as standard data entry and constituency contacting.  He says that, where possible, he will bring interns along to meetings that might be of interest to the students involved.  The internships are unpaid, but you will gain invaluable experience and an all-important line on your resume'. This is a great opportunity to see how a district office operates and to learn about politics from the ground up.

If you are interested in an internship in Congressman Kilmer's office, you should send Mr. Carr an email expressing your interest at nicholas.carr@mail.house.gov  Include a letter of interest (which should include a mention of your GPA and some reference to your research and writing skills) along with a resume'.  You should also ask for a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who knows you and can speak to your strengths as a student and potential intern.

If you are interested in gaining credit for the internship, there are two options, one an independent study and the other enrollment in P&G 498, the Internship Tutorial.  Please contact Professor Sousa, Department Chair, about these options.
