The Stumbling Democracy in the Middle East: Challenges and Prospects.
A talk by Aseel Alawadhi
Monday, March 24th at 6pm in the Tahoma Room (Commencement Hall.)
Following the attacks of Sep 11, democratization in the Middle East became a demand of national security. Attempts have been made in Western academia to reconcile Islam and Muslim societies with political liberalism and democracy, while foreign policy makers supported regime changes led by “moderate Islamists” to replace authoritarian regimes with democracy. Such attempts don’t seem to succeed. In this lecture, I will explain what I think to be the crucial factors that hinder democratization in the Middle East, and will shed light on the problematic assumptions that arguments for “Islamic Liberalism” or “non-secular democracy” rest upon.

3/12: Mock law school class on campus

Dear Professor O'Neil,

My name is Jake Novack and I am one of the officers of the Pre-Law Society on campus. I am writing you to see if it is possible to have information about an event we're putting on this Wednesday sent out over the P&G blog.

Professor Keith Cunningham-Parmeter of Willamette University's law school is coming to campus to discuss the different academic programs available at Willamette as well as putting on a mock law school class session. We think this will be a great opportunity for students to learn more about what law school has to offer for those considering (and even those who haven't so far!) graduate school.

The event is this Wednesday (March 12th) and is being held in McIntyre 107 at 3:00pm.

Those who want more information are welcome to contact our president, Daniel Thorson, at dthorson@pugetsound.edu. Thank you so much for your time.

 Best, Jake Novack

Internship with Project Votesmart

The Project Vote Smart National Internship Program provides a unique lesson in the study of American politics. Students from across the nation and around the world come to our high tech research center in the Montana Rockies for ten weeks to help American citizens educate themselves about elected officials and candidates. By providing this information in an easy and accessible manner, Project Vote Smart believes that citizens can better defend themselves from the political hype and misrepresentation characteristic of present day political campaigns.

Interns play a crucial role at Project Vote Smart and make up the vast majority of our staff. The individual talents, ideas and hard work of our interns have been instrumental in the success of many of our most important programs.

Since the Project researches thousands of elected officials and candidates' backgrounds, the work is often tedious. However, if you are interested in making a genuine contribution to your Nation, in an idealistic and positive environment -- located in the middle of a natural wonderland -- we would love to have you join our team. There is plenty of room to learn and grow with the organization. Interns often return as staff members after they have finished their college careers.

College students and recent graduates typically participate in our National Internship Program. Interns must commit to ten consecutive weeks, but may intern anytime during the year. We accept applications on a rolling basis and have no deadline, but interns are encouraged to submit their applications early because space does fill up quickly. Interns live on-site at the Project's Great Divide Ranch and scholarships pay for all living costs, including room and board.

Requirements

Project Vote Smart's National Internship Program provides students with unique practical and educational experiences. We seek interns who are genuinely interested in working to accomplish our goal of making factual, unbiased political information easily and freely accessible to all. The overriding qualification for securing an internship position is your willingness to commit 100% to the Project's goals and mission.

To qualify for a Vote Smart internship you must meet the following:
  • Set aside political beliefs and be objective and non-partisan while working.
  • Be in good standing with your university/school.
  • Commit to 10 consecutive weeks.
  • Remember that our research facility is located in an extraordinarily beautiful but remote area. You will be expected to maintain the facility.
Applying

National Intern applicants must submit the following:
  • Completed application form.
  • Resume and cover letter.
  • Minimum of three academic or professional references. References need only be names and contact information
  • More information can be found at: http://votesmart.org/internships/?utm_source=votesmart&utm_medium=homepagelink#.Ux46D8poWiB
Applications can be found at http://www.votesmart.org/internships/application

Jobs with Fund for the Public Interest

As always, do your homework regarding whether these kinds of jobs are good opportunities or not.  -Professor O'Neil
http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/The-Fund-for-the-Public-Interest-Reviews-E215980.htm

Dear Dr. O'Neil, My name is Kate and I'm the director with the Fund for the Public Interest in our Portland office. We are a national non-profit organization that runs grassroots campaigns for the nation’s top progressive non-profits including Environment America, U.S. PIRG, Fair Share, and the Human Rights Campaign.

We are currently hiring 2014 college graduates to run our campaign offices across the country. This year, I will be in charge of recruiting top candidates for career positions at the University of Puget Sound.

I’m very excited to be working with your campus. In fact, two of my fellow directors attended Puget Sound. My ultimate goal is to interview 5 (or more) graduating seniors for directing positions. I would also be excited to meet any interested undergrads; we have lots of summer positions available, as well as careers for them down the road! In order to do this I will be networking with different contacts on campus, and I will need a lot of help.

Sue Dahlin, at the career center, suggested that you might be willing to help me spread the word. I have posted a blurb at the bottom with more information. Would you be willing to share it in your classes, send it out in an email, or department newsletter?

Additionally, if you know of any good candidates, feel free to nominate them yourself and I would be happy to follow up with them. If you have any questions or wish to nominate one of your students, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks for your consideration,

Kate Wiggins Assistant Canvass Director – Fund for the Public Interest 1536 SE 11th Ave, Suite C Portland OR, 97214 Work: 503-231-6679 Cell: 812-459-3099 Email: kwiggins@fundstaff.org

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support for progressive organizations across the country.

We run campaigns for Environment America, U.S.PIRG, Fair Share, and the Human Rights Campaign. In the coming year we will be running offices in over 35 cities, mobilizing public support, and meeting with our elected officials to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.

We are currently hiring graduating seniors to run our campaign offices across the country. As a Citizen Outreach Director you will recruit, train, and manage a staff of 10-20 people to raise money, build membership, and do campaign work on a variety of social issues. We are hiring smart, hard-working, and motivated seniors to do this important work. Progress does not come easily. The closer we get to a cleaner environment, more tolerant society, or a more open democracy, the harder powerful special interests and opposing forces push back. If we want to see real, sustained social change, we need to do more. We need to organize. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But no matter what, we’re building a bigger movement. We will talk to 2.8 million people this year, one person at a time.

Are you one of us? If so, I can’t wait to meet you. For more information on careers with the Fund, contact Kate Wiggins kwiggins@fundstaff.org
