The SOUTHWEST SEMESTER is a geological and environmental policy tour of the American West, and will consist of a unique, integrated 4-unit program. We will start on campus, and then explore a wide range of environmental issues while “on site” as we travel throughout the western United States. 

The Program will be taught for the first time in August-November, 2015, followed by  Fall 2017



THE COURSES ARE
:      
      Geo 310:  Water Resources
      Geol 315: Energy Resources

      Geo 330: Regional Field Geology
      P&G 309:   Applied Environmental Politics and Agenda Setting
  

PREREQUISITES:  GEOLOGY 101, ENVR 101



THE PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ALL MAJORS



COSTS:    1 semester tuition, room, board, student fees

PLUS: $3,000 (est) trip fee      
AND: Personal expenses


2015 PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE AND ITINERARY



August 3-August 19, 2015: on campus (dorms)


August 20: Departure date; travel by vans (camping  on “tour” legs):


          Tour, Leg 1: Grand Coulee, Yellowstone, Wind  Rivers, Dinosaur


          Base Camp 1: Crested Butte (CO)       


          Tour, Leg 2: Canyonlands, Arches, Natural Bridges, Glen Canyon, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde


          Base Camp 2, Ghost Ranch (NM): Los Alamos and  Sandia National Labs, Valle Grande, Bandelier, Santa Fe, Rio Grande


          Tour, Leg 3: Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Glen Canyon Dam, Grand Canyon (south rim), Hoover Dam, Salton Sea, San Andreas Fault


          Base Camp 3 (SF area)- finish before Thanksgiving



Late November-Finals week: Complete PG 309, Geo 315 projects  (on campus/remote)
