Lecture of Interest on Technology use in Syrian Refugee Camps

Creating Futures through Magical Devices and Library Caravans: Participatory Design with Syrian Youth at Za’atari Refugee Camp by Professor Karen E. Fisher

When: Monday, October 10th at 3:00 – 4:00 with a Q&A session at 4 p.m.
Where: Library Room 020

In 2016 the world is facing the worst humanitarian crisis since WWII: over 65M people are forcibly displaced, and half of them are youth. Drawing on previous work with U.S. teens from East Africa, Myanmar and Latin America, we explore how technology and libraries can help young Syrian refugees build their futures. We report on recent fieldwork from Zaatari Syrian Refugee Camp in Jordan, highlighting youth creativity, desire to help others via ICT wayfaring and crisis response, and universal design archetypes. We share sample design specs for glasses that detect disease and other magical devices, storytelling sessions, a YouTube community memory project, and interviews with refugee volunteers at caravan libraries. The United Nations Refugee Agency gave us a mission to help build capacity through innovation at Zaatari. In this talk, we pause, to debrief and brainstorm with audiences on how libraries and technology can help refugee youth and families re imagine their lives in the Middle East and world at-large. Shukran.

Karen E. Fisher, Professor, information school, University of Washington. An advocate of humanitarian research, her passion is how libraries and information technology can create futures. Fisher is working with Arab refugees in the Middle East and Europe, understanding their information behavior, and building capacity through education, livelihoods, and social engagement.

Slater Museum of Natural History seeks Politics & Government docents!

I'm the Education and Outreach Specialist at our university's Slater Museum of Natural History. In addition to being a valuable repository of over 90,000 plant and animal specimens from around the world, the Slater works to enrich knowledge and appreciation of natural history, both at UPS and in our larger community. Every year, dozens of student docents are invaluable members of our team. Docents develop and deliver public events on and off campus, assist with our successful Nature in the Classroom elementary education program, and --this year more than ever-- are invited to participate in exhibit design and fabrication.

I am reaching out to many departments in the hopes of generating a diverse, interdisciplinary docent team for this year. There are two upcoming opportunities for students to learn more about docenting at the Slater: A Docent Interest Meeting on Sept. 7, 6-7 PM; and a Docent Bootcamp on Sunday, September 18 from 9-3. (The bootcamp involves free food!) Both take place at the museum: Thompson rm. 295.

Politics & Government students would provide valuable insight into connections between, well, politics, government, and natural history-- especially at the local level. (Of course, much of the practice of natural history has historically revolved around power and exploitation.) These students' perspectives would enrich our public events, educational outreach, and exhibits. Additionally, students interested in gaining experience interacting with the public or working in a museum setting would benefit greatly from participating with Slater.

Introducing PG 383: Politics of Natural Resources

This course will be offered only once by Professor Riitta Koivumaeki:
Fall 2016, Tuesday/Thursday at 2pm

Interested in wars over natural resources, international cooperation on climate change, or the power of recycling? This course explores these and other pressing topics through a broad overview of the politics of natural resources. We begin the course by examining how oil and other minerals influence political and economic development, and why mineral rich countries appear more likely to engage in war and conflict. We then turn our focus to other resources, namely water, forests, and clean air, and evaluate the role that governments and international cooperation play in ensuring access to them. The course culminates in a section on politics of climate change at the local and international level.

In addition to short response papers, the course includes a policy paper on a topic of your choosing. These assignments, together with various in-class exercises, will help you develop and sharpen your research and critical thinking skills. By the end of the semester, you will be able to identify key theories of resource politics and apply them to real-world cases. You will also possess the tools necessary to continue to explore politics and governance of natural resources in an analytical and systematic manner.

Edmonds Intern Campaign Manager Position

County Council Campaign Manager
10-15 hours per week
Now-Late August
Internship

Position Description:
The Pierce County Council is held by a slim 5-4 Republican majority.  Carolyn Edmonds (D) is running to unseat a Republican incumbent and flip the balance.

The campaign manager will work directly with Carolyn while under the supervision of the campaign consultant.  The intern’s primary job is to help the candidate maximize their time spent with voters and in fundraising.  Responsibilities will include tracking and organizing fundraising, event logistics, managing volunteers, data entry, doorbelling and phonebanking.  A reliable form of transportation may be necessary depending on the campaign and intern’s location.  Some campaign related experience is preferred – volunteer experience is fine – but more importantly, we’re looking for someone with energy and a passion for getting involved in local politics.

After August, this will be a paid position.  Graduating seniors interested in paid campaign work in the fall should consider applying and will be given first preference for that position.

Campaign Fellowship Opportunity for UPS Students

From: Alex McNeil
To: David Sousa

Hey Professor,

I'm emailing because I'm hiring fellows, and I wanted to reach out to UPS students who might be interested in diving into the campaign.

I'm going to be here through November, so I'll be looking for folks for summer, fall, or both. The fellowship is with the Iowa Democratic Party coordinated campaign. It's unpaid, but I can guarantee housing (which often comes with meals) for anyone making the trip.

Many of my co-workers started as fellows, and these positions often lead into paid gigs as organizers. The fellowship is one of the surest ways to get a foot in the door--the fast track, so to speak.

The job: A fellow would work with me to build a grass roots machine across two counties I'm supervising. This would entail meeting with locals, planning and executing phone banks, voter registration drives and canvas launches; and generally, organizing a massive get out the vote effort leading up to November. The perks: a chance to work for the good guys in an important cycle, a high degree of autonomy and responsibility in an intense and rewarding work environment, and a great opportunity for professional development, especially for those interested in a career in politics.

Those interested should reach out to me directly at amcneil@pugetsound.edu with an email including a resume and short self-description.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Best,
Alex
