Smith for Mayor Internship, Portland--Deadline 6/15

Hello Professor O'Neil,

I am an intern on the Jefferson Smith campaign for mayor and we are currently opening up our summer fellowship program for more participants. The Political Immersion Program is an opportunity for students from all academic disciplines, but especially politics, to work in a professional environment developing visibility campaigns, creating a social media presence, and experiencing local government. We would appreciate it if you would pass this opportunity along to your students. The following is the press release includes all the information about the program. (I've also attached it for your convenience.)

“A Summer for Portland”
Political Immersion Fellowship
with Jefferson Smith’s campaign for Mayor

Join our Political Immersion Fellowship and give a summer for Portland’s future. Be part of a campaign that’s already historic -- check out our number of Facebook fans, house party hosts, and individual donors to know why. We’re looking for a group of interested, committed, and talented Fellows to help us mayor-make and be the core of our campaign. We’re looking for people who enjoy learning, adapting, and exploring new ideas. Our Fellows will learn the ins and outs of Portland politics, gain hands-on experience, and professional skills, work in a dynamic environment, and network with some of Oregon’s influential leaders -- all while potentially earning academic credit and working with a great team of fellow do-gooders.

This experience is for all kinds of students -- politically inclined or not.

If you’re interested in Portland, this Fellowship is for you. Our projects range from public service to event planning, communications, social media, policy development, non-profit partnerships, and administration.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Create and implement an unprecedented visibility campaign and help manage the campaign on the daily.  Roles and responsibilities depend on interest, expertise, immediate campaign needs. Examples?
    •    Attend campaign and community events with Jefferson and staffers
    •    Identify outreach and community engagement opportunities
    •    Assist with social media and traditional communications projects
    •    Attend campaign house parties to meet new donors and volunteers
    •    Work with volunteer leaders in the community and recruit new volunteers
    •    Support donor research and fundraising efforts

Qualifications:
    •    Flexibility -- campaign work requires this every day
    •    Ability to work collaboratively and independently
    •    Willingness to take initiative and insatiable appetite to learn
    •    Attention -- no, devotion -- to detail and ability multi-task
    •    Strong written and verbal communication skills
    •    Commitment to progressive political causes and candidates
    •    Laptop and reliable transportation desired, but not required

The Fine Print
We’re asking for 20 hours a week to get you a full-on, mayor-making experience (though we can talk about fewer hours if need be). While the position’s unpaid, we’re more than happy to work with you and your school to arrange for academic credit.

To apply, visit our website (www.jeffersonsmith.com/intern/) for all the details, or email a resume and letter of interest to Bryan Little,  bryan@jeffersonsmith.com. Application deadline is 6/15/2012.

Thanks so much,
Madeline Meininger
