For several years Professors Fields, Share and I have been teaching our PG 102 Introduction to Comparative Politics course using the book
River Town by Peter Hessler. It's an outstanding view of contemporary China from the perspective of a young man working there through the Peace Corps. We began speaking to Hesser about his coming to visit campus, and in summer 2004 I had dinner with him in Beijing to talk a bit about the details (and got a great night tour in the process). Finally, we got him to join us as part of his book tour for his new work,
Oracle Bones.
