Congressman Reichert Spring Internships

To Whom It May Concern,

The Washington, D.C. and the Mercer Island District Offices of Congressman Dave Reichert are excited to announce that we are accepting internship applications for the spring. Interns are an integral part of our office, working on the front lines of constituent services.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge on the inner workings of the federal government. Internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching constituent requests, drafting correspondence, constituent outreach, keeping up to date on local and national issues, and data entry. There are also opportunities for long-term research and outreach projects.

We are looking for applicants interested in government, law, public policy, or social sciences. A competitive candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, possess strong communication skills, and be familiar with Microsoft Office.

Hi Prof. O'Neil,

Happy New Year! Thank you for forwarding our internship information to
students and your colleagues last year. To give you the quick update,
in the fall 160 students went through our training program. Interns
across the country have organized events on their campuses from canned
food drives to support local food banks to collecting hundreds of
petitions to get National Geographic to clean up its paper mill to
preparing to registering students to vote in 2012. Maggie Allen from
Whitman College recruited 14 students and organized an event where she
and her volunteers canvassed local neighborhoods about sustainability
and distributed CFL lightbulbs to 55 households.

Due to increased interest and the success from in the fall we've
decided to hire more interns for our spring engagement internships.
Students go through a 5-week training program to learn how to organize
a campaign on campus and engage their peers on issues that matter to
them. The deadline to apply for the first spring session is Wednesday,
Feb. 1.

Congressman Adam Smith seeks Community Liaison (full-time) to develop and implement a strong constituency outreach program. Duties include acting as a liaison to develop and maintain relationships, participating in meetings, speaking on the Member’s behalf, corresponding with constituency groups, monitoring important community issues for the Congressman, and working with other district staff on local projects.

Prior experience working for Congress or community relations is preferred. Strong writing and verbal skills, an understanding of Congress and current federal policy issues are also desired. A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.

Save the Date to join us for the latest in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences' Community Engagement Forums focusing on Wrongful Convictions in Washington State. The panelists will discuss recent cases of wrongful conviction here in WA (4 exonerations since 2008) focusing on the general factors that contributed to these wrongful convictions as well as what can be done to minimize future risk including procedural and legislative changes (modeled after what other states and local municipalities have already enacted). The forum will consist of a panel discussion followed by Q&A.

2012 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute

2012 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Application Cycle is Open!

Who is Eligible for the APSA Ralph Bunche Program?

The program targets students from racial/ethnic groups that are significantly underrepresented in science in the United States, e.g. African American, Latino/a, Native American, and Pacific Island students. All students who are members of these groups, or who are interested in broadening participation in political science by students from underrepresented minority populations and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting under-represented groups, are eligible to apply. Applicants must be:

  • United States citizens.
  • Completing their junior year of undergraduate study.
  • Majoring in political science or a related discipline.
  • Have an interest in attending graduate school in political science.

Application Process

Participants in the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute are drawn from a competitive national applicant pool. The RBSI Selection Committee reviews applications and will make decisions during the month of February. Applicants will be informed of their status via email. Applicants should submit the following required information:

  • 2012 RBSI Application Form (MS Word)
  • Three letters of recommendation: one from department chair, and two more from other people who are familiar with the applicant's academic qualifications.
  • A personal statement, not to exceed two double-spaced typed pages, stating the reasons for wanting to participate in the 2012 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute.
  • Resume
  • Official academic transcripts (including Fall semester)

Tacoma Congressional spring semester internship

Congressman Smith Currently Seeking Applicants for Internship Positions in his Tacoma, WA District Office

Candidates should have an interest in the legislative process and civic service, possess excellent writing and communication skills, and work well as part of a team.

Interns in the District Office have an opportunity to work in community outreach, constituent services and drafting policy and issue updates. This includes working with caseworkers to help constituents with issues relating to immigration, military and government agencies, among others. Depending on interests, interns also have an opportunity to participate in community outreach, attending meetings and events with outreach staff and Congressman Smith and assisting with town hall meetings.

Other intern duties are administrative: assisting staff with answering phones, data entry, scanning/copying and other tasks as needed. The internship is either a part-time or full-time position requiring approximately 20 (part-time) or 40 (full-time) scheduled hours per week during posted business hours (8:00am to 5:00pm).

Greetings everyone!

Due to scheduling difficulties which have come up as well as the intense nature of intellectual commitments this week and next (ahem! ahem!), the Model UN executive team has decided to cancel tomorrow evening's interest meeting in favor of a time next semester when it will be easier (and less demanding) for more people to attend. We absolutely realize that minutes are weighed in gold at the moment. :)

However, since we will be registering for the Chicago MUN conference over break (http://www.chomun.org), if you are seriously interested, please email me before December 15th, and I will get in touch with you personally over winter break to coordinate your registration. If you are not sure about Chicago but would like to know more about Model UN next semester, feel free to email as well! I will be more than happy to answer your questions over break.

December 1st (Tomorrow!) Film: Paradise Now

Tomorrow, December 1 at 6:30pm in Rausch Auditorium, the Global Politics Film Series will be showing our final film of this semester, Paradise Now. It is a Palestinian film that examines the motivations behind suicide terrorism, and follows the story of two childhood friends who have been recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv.

The Hertog Program is designed to allow exceptional students a rigorous look at the theory and practice of politics. In the heart of the nation's capital, on the campus of George Washington University, Hertog Fellows study classic trexts in political thought such as Plato's Republic, Machiavelli's Prince, and some of the seminal documents of American politics with an outstanding faculty. In addition, students study selected public policy issues with some of those who helped formulate and implement those policies.

The 2012 Hertog Program will have two parts each consisting of three sections of 15 students each:

1) The Hertog Summer Seminar is a full-scholarship, six-week program in the theory and practice of politics. In addition to the study mentioned above, students will hear from approximately 20 outside speaker from the world of political affairs- public officials, public policy analysts, and writers on politics and policy. Our speakers will include Bill Kristol, Juan Williams, David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer. The Summer Seminar will begin June 11th and end July 20th. All students admitted will receive a full scholarship and a $3,000 stipend.

2) The Hertog Summer Fellowship is a new, two-week, full-scholarship program focusing on a single topic in political thought or area of public policy. While the Sumnmer Seminar program is designed for all undergraduateas, the Summer Fellowship is open to upper-level undergraduates and recent college geraduates. For 2012, our there se3ctions weill be devoted to foreign policy, democratice capitalism, and the futer of the welfare state, and tocqueville's Democracy in America. The Summer Fellowship will begin on July 23rd and end on August 3rd and each sutudent admitted will receive a full scholarship and a $1,000 stipend.

ICPSR Undergraduate Summer Internship Program 2012

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the world's largest archive of digital social science data, is now accepting applications for its annual summer internship program. ICPSR is a unit within the institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. ICPSR's data are the foundation for thousands of research articles, reports, and books. Findings from these data are put to use by scholars, policy analysts, policy makers, the media, and the public.

Interns spend ten weekds from June 4- August 10, 2012, at ICPSR (Ann Arbor, Michigan), during which they will:
  • Work in small groups and with faculty mentors to complete research projects resulting in conference-ready posters
  • Gain experience using statistical programs such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata to check data, working in both UNIX and Windows environments
  • Attend courses in the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research
  • Participate in a weekly Lunch and Lecture series that covers topics related to social science research and progessional development.
Compensation:
$3,000 - $5,000* stipend, room and partial-board in university housing, and a scholarship covering the cost of fees, rtexts, and materials for coursework in the ICPSR Summer Program.
