Opportunity for Puget Sound Students! Full Year Paid Training Program!

Dear Professor O'Neil,

My name is Charlotte and I'm the Recruitment Director with Green Corps, the Field School for Environmental Organizing.

I’m emailing to see if you can forward information about our program to your students at Puget Sound again this year.  Applications for our 2015-2016 program are now being accepted and our early application deadline is February 1st.

Green Corps runs a full year paid training program for college graduates that combines intensive classroom training with leaders in the environmental movement and field placement working on urgent environmental issues with organizations like the Sierra Club and Food & Water Watch. Some of our alumni include Phil Radford, Executive Director of Greenpeace USA and Sarah Hodgdon, National Program Director at Sierra Club.

Can you forward this blurb and link below to your students to let them know about the opportunity?

Don’t hesitate to email me back if you have any questions, and thank you!

In Green Corps’ yearlong paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution, factory farming and many others — with groups like Sierra Club and Food & Water Watch. And when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

For more information, read on or visit
http://www.greencorps.org/apply.html .

In your year with Green Corps:

Be trained by the best: Green Corps organizers take part in trainings with leading figures in the environmental and social change movements: people like Adam Ruben, former political director and current board president of MoveOn.org, and Bill McKibben, author and founder of 350.org.

Gain experience across the country: Green Corps sends organizers to jumpstart campaigns for groups such as Rainforest Action Network, Power Shift, and Environment America in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and dozens of other places in between.

Make an impact on today’s environmental challenges
: Green Corps organizers have built the campaigns that helped keep the Arctic safe from drilling; led to new laws to support clean, renewable energy; convinced major corporations to stop dumping in our oceans; and much, much more.

Get paid! Green Corps organizers earn a salary of $25,000. Organizers also have a chance to opt into our health care program with a pre-tax monthly salary deferral. We offer paid sick days and holidays, two weeks paid vacation and a student loan repayment program for those who qualify.

Launch your career: Green Corps will help connect you to environmental and progressive groups that are looking for full-time staff to build their organizations and help them create social change and protect our environment.

Internship with Forterra (formerly Cascade Land Conservancy) in Seattle

From: Katrina Bloemsma <bloemsma.k@gmail.com>

Subject: Internship Opportunity

Hi Patrick and Alisa,

Just wanted to help get the word out about a marketing internship with Forterra in Seattle.

It's a great opportunity with a local non-profit. Forterra (formerly Cascade Land Conservancy) is involved in communities across the Puget Sound, including Tacoma and Seattle. They traditionally have focused on land conservation but increasingly are involved in policy work, specifically around land use and development. While I never worked for Forterra, I've been involved with them in the past as a volunteer and trustee and cannot speak highly enough of their work and the people they employ! For the right student, this internship could be a huge first professional opportunity.

Hope you're both well!

Katrina

NEW IR Course for Spring 2015

Hello P&G Majors and Minors,

I wanted to make you are aware that we just added a new course for Spring term.  US Foreign Policy in the Middle East will meet at 10-10:50 am on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Since it is being added late, it is likely to be a smaller class and smaller classes are rare in IR, so I urge you to consider the class. Prerequisite: PG 103 recommended.

After briefly exploring the history of the US in the region we will grapple with the US role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the multiple challenges in US-Iran relations, the escalating war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and much more. So if you have a desire to grapple with the challenges the US faces in this important but tumultuous region, sign up.

The course is open for registration on People Soft.  If you have any problems adding, please contact Lori Blake in the Registrar’s office and she will be happy to assist you.

Best regards,
Kelly Erickson
