Hi Professor Kessel,

Impact is offering a year-long opportunity in grassroots organizing that helps prepare for a career in social change.
Our early application deadline is this Saturday, February 3rd. I’m hoping that you can connect us with graduating seniors who have the determination and are passionate about engaging with the public to create change.
Right now, we’re hiring graduating seniors for our 2018 class of Impact organizers. We also have immediate start opportunities available.

Impact organizers are on the ground to mobilize businesses, faith leaders and citizens to demonstrate the commitment to keeping our promises on climate change, and transitioning a sustainable, renewable energy economy. Right now, many of our organizers are working with elected leaders in states across the country to meet goals of getting to at least 10 percent solar by 2030. Grassroots efforts like these have helped triple solar nationwide in just the last two years.

Change is hard and we need to work together to make a difference and that’s why I’m asking you to please forward this email to remind your students that our early application deadline is this Saturday, February 3rd.

Thank you,
Allison Cairo
Impact Director

Puget Sound students participate in the Washington State Legislative Internship Program

Abby Crowell writes: President Crawford was in Olympia with the Independent Colleges of Washington speaking to legislators about higher education. We spoke with him about this opportunity and how it is shaping our career development,  how it is working with our majors and how lucky we are to go to Puget Sound where experiential learning is a top priority!

The application for the 2018-19 REAL Change class is now open

Are you feeling a call to action? We are looking for the next generation of activists and leaders in fighting poverty at home and abroad. The REAL Change Organizing and Advocacy Fellowship is a hands-on training program for young people between the ages of 18–30. During the yearlong program, fellows learn how to work with the media, their communities, and policymakers to create change.

REAL Change participants receive a crash course in advocacy at the RESULTS International Conference in Washington, DC. After three days of coaching and inspiration, fellows spend the final day of the conference on Capitol Hill and speak directly with members of Congress and their staff. Throughout the rest of the year, fellows receive ongoing training on biweekly calls. They hone their advocacy skills by taking actions ranging from writing letters to the editor to hosting events to meeting with their members of Congress in-district.

RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed everyday people. Together they use their voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. Volunteers receive training, support, and inspiration to become skilled advocates. In time, volunteers learn to effectively advise policy makers, guiding them towards decisions that improve access to education, health, and economic opportunity. Backed by the in-depth research and legislative expertise of staff, RESULTS advocates realize the incredible power they possess to use their voices to change the world.

As a REAL Change Fellow you will:
Receive training and support over 12 months to become a powerful advocate for the end of poverty.
Learn how to lobby your member of Congress on everything from tax policies that can lift millions of low-income Americans out of poverty to global health initiatives like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Become a skilled organizer who mobilizes your community to fight poverty.
Write pieces that get published in the media.
Start your own RESULTS chapter or help a local RESULTS chapter grow and thrive.
Attend the RESULTS International Conference in Washington, DC. Past speakers include Dr. Jim Yong Kim, Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Tavis Smiley, Marian Wright Edelman, and Muhammad Yunus, and more.
Attend the REAL Change Spring Policy Summit to learn about RESULTS priority issues in depth and the federal budget process, then head back to Capitol Hill.

Qualifications:
Passion for creating change and fighting poverty.
Ability to commit an average of 6 hours per week.
Commitment to join biweekly conference calls on Wednesday nights and monthly national calls on Saturday afternoons.
Preference given to those with past experience in student or community activism, political campaigns, or other anti-poverty or social justice focused activities.
Be between the ages of 18 - 30 at the start of the Fellowship.
Attend the 2018 RESULTS International Conference in July in Washington, DC.
RESULTS will cover flights, hotels, and some meals. There is a $200 fee to cover certain activities which cannot be waived. RESULTS will provide resources to help Fellows fundraise the $200 fee

Student Internship Award Opportunity - deadline 3/26

Dear Representatives of College Career Centers/Student Affairs/Political Science Departments:

I am pleased to announce the 21st annual Hartwig Memorial Internship Award. Your school is one of the colleges and universities across the country whose students have been selected to participate in this year's essay competition, the winner of which will receive a $1,500 cash award to use during the tenure of an internship in Washington, DC.

Peter Hart, the founder of Hart Research Associates, established this award to honor the memory of Paul Frederick Hartwig, Ph.D. (1941-1997), former Union College professor of political science and senior vice president of Hart Research. Fred Hartwig believed that it was very important for young Americans to be introduced to the nation's capital, the seat of the federal government and democracy. He believed that seeing and being a part of what goes on in Washington would enhance young people's appreciation for government, engage them in America's ongoing public conversations and debates, and result in their becoming more informed and involved citizens and leaders. This internship award is designed to promote and support this experience among college students from all liberal arts disciplines.

The award is specifically for students who will intern in or around the nation's capital this summer. While the student does not necessarily need to work on Capitol Hill or on a political campaign to qualify, the internship must be in the broad field of government, public policy, or politics.

The deadline for submitting an application is March 26, 2018.

On behalf of the entire selection committee, I look forward to honoring a deserving student this spring with the 21st annual Hartwig Memorial Internship Award.
