Leah in Athens--a great study abroad blog

Leah Kennebeck has a great blog post on being in Athens in the midst of the turmoil.

Today (Tuesday, 2 days after the rioting) was the first time I ventured out of my neighborhood of Pangrati to see the destruction in Syntagma Square. Though the rubble had been cleared out, there were still fresh reminders of the riots, with burns marks on sidewalks and broken bus stop covers that people had apparently been standing on top of. Charred remains of several buildings were surrounded by policemen about a block off of the main square. The police here are quite unsettling, they linger all over the city center, looking for eye contact, as if daring you to protest...

Are Graduate Degrees Worth It?

From the Washington Post:

(excerpt; full article here)
In early 2011, Ramsey Day was completing his 21 / 2-year tour as head of USAID’s Montenegro office and evaluating his next job offer. The 36-year-old’s political career trajectory had been steep and fast. Starting in 2003, he had: served as an advance representative for Vice President Dick Cheney; worked on George Bush’s 2004 reelection campaign; won a political appointment to USAID’s Europe-Eurasia Bureau; been promoted to the bureau’s chief of staff, and then promoted again to chief of USAID’s Public Liaison Office.

With that track record, his successful stint in Montenegro, and his deep management experience, Day seemed positioned for advancement by almost any measure — any measure, that is, but his academic credentials. With a bachelor’s degree only, he was shut out of the running for positions at the next level of leadership in the U.S. Agency for International Development. His new assignment felt like it would be a step down: a post as general development officer in a remote area of Afghanistan, which (because it was also a move from civil to foreign service) came with a $50,000 pay cut — half of his Montenegro salary.

“That,” he says, “was not something I intended on doing.”

In a field that relies on technical expertise in specialties such as international economics, agriculture or democratic governance, and is dominated by those with advanced degrees, Day says his management skills took him only so far. He was a skilled problem solver who could identify development goals and assemble teams of experts to execute action plans in his host country, but he was doing it without the academic credentials. “I knew that at some point my lack of a master’s would catch up to me,” he says.

And so, instead of going to Afghanistan last year, Day went to graduate school. After weighing acceptance letters from American University’s School of International Service and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Day left the mountains of Montenegro in August and moved to Cambridge, where he is now halfway through a one-year master’s in public administration....

Talk on Social Movements in Chile

From: Rachel DeMotts
Date: Fri, Feb 10, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Greetings everyone,

The director of the SIT program in Chile will be on campus on Friday 17 February, and we are able to take advantage of his presence to have him give a brown bag for us. Please invite your students to Victor Tricot's talk at noon in Wyatt 326.

Chile has usually been characterized by the political science literature as a high quality democracy, being used as a model of development and institutional strength. However, during the last year the country has witnessed the emergence of the biggest social movement seen in democracy. The student social movement has not only questioned the educational system, but it has also shown the weakness of an institutional model that disregards civil society participation. This presentation intends to seek some preliminary answers as regards this ongoing social phenomenon, analyzing the institutional factors (constraints) that may have contributed to the current wave of social discontent.

Thanks,

Rachel

Fuse Washington Internship

W. Washington's Progressive Internship

From: alex epstein
Date: Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 1:44 PM

Dear Professor,

I hope this message finds you well.

As a UPS alumni and current Senior Organizer for Fuse Washington, I can see how huge of an impact the internships I took part in, while attending UPS had on my career. That’s why it’s exciting to let you know about an open internship we have for this spring and summer.

Fuse is Washington’s largest progressive organization, with over 100,000 members across the state who organize online and on the ground on issues that matter. An internship with Fuse will give your students hands-on experience in political and issue advocacy and an opportunity to network with local experts and see how campaigns really work.

We want to extend this opportunity to more local students and I hope that you can help us find the right students.

I've already posted our listing at Career Services, but I wanted to explain in a little more detail how our opportunities could benefit your students, so that you can help us get the word out.

Fuse interns work with our staff to develop the Progressive Voters Guide (viewed by over 100,000 Washingtonians), develop videos and materials disseminated throughout the progressive online community, and are given the opportunity to work with some of the best, most experienced political minds in the progressive community.

This spring we have several research and writing needs. Our growing research department examines PDC filings, news accounts, and produces issue papers and profiles of candidates and political organizations. Interns would come away with a deep knowledge of the progressive political landscape, as well as get research and writing experience.

Our organizing program is working to grow an offline community of activists building power in their districts with voter contact through phones, doors, house parties, block parties, and other neighborhood and community events. An intern here would gain invaluable experience in direct voter contact and strategy, and would be able to use these skills in other campaign work.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our program. We would be very grateful if you would recommend and forward this opportunity to students that may be interested. Please encourage them to apply, because nothing is more valuable than your recommendation in finding the best candidates. They can send a resume and brief cover letter to alex@fusewashington.org.

Thanks very much for your time,
--
