PG Grad Update: Ellie Page, '13

Ellie Page (PG major, 2013 grad) is attending law school at University of Washington.  She has just been accepted into the University of Washington’s Masters of Public Health Services program.  Ellie will working this summer in Olympia at the Office of Program Research for the Washington State House of Representatives, working on health-related legislation.  Congrats to Ellie for all of these accomplishments!

News and an offer to help alums from Cead Nardie-Warner '11

Since leaving Congressman Smith's district office and campaign, I moved home to St. Louis, Mo. Because I was hesitant to jump back into politics here (for a myriad of reasons), and I was unable to head to DC to pursue policy work for family reasons, I began looking for opportunities that would push me to continue developing critical thinking, writing and strategic planning skills. Fortunately, St. Louis is the global headquarters for FleishmanHillard (FH) and I was able to get a job with their Public Affairs team. The adjustment to mid-western corporate life has been interesting, but the quality of the people I work with is amazing and I am learning a lot about our country - politically, economically and socially. I consistently work on policy analysis and strategic planning for issues, crises, reputation and public awareness across many industries and levels of government including health care, agriculture, and energy to name a few. 

Recently, I helped a former UPS grad and friend find a position with our Sacramento office working with our food and agriculture group. Through this process I was reminded about how little I considered or even knew about positions with companies like FH when I was in school. And, that we rarely see students in our intern programs that come from schools like Puget Sound. That said, I think the liberal arts education model and the creativity of the students at UPS translates really well to this profession and I have seen some success. I simply want to open the door to anyone who may be interested in learning more about public affairs, agency consulting, PR etc... FH has operations in most major cities in the country.

Alex McNeil Wins Summer Research Award

Congratulations to P&G major Alex McNeil, who won a university summer research grant of $3250 for his project, "Fifty Shades of Green: A Comparative Study of Alternative Energy Policies in the United States."  Alex plans to examine states' efforts to cultivate wind, solar, and hydroelectric power with an eye toward assessing the efficacy of different approaches.

It has been a good couple of weeks for Alex.  In addition to this award, he recently won a social sciences writing prize for a paper on political parties and polarization he wrote in Professor Sousa's P&G 312, "Parties, Campaigns, and Elections."  

PG Grad Update- Natalie Nakamine, 2011

At last week’s WPSA meeting, alumna Natalie Nakamine, class of 2011, presented “Does Political Power Affect Policies? Immigrant Political Incorporation and State Immigrant Laws.”  She is getting ready to start her dissertation at UC Irvine.

Congratulations Samantha Tigner!

Congratulations to PG major Samantha Tigner who reports:

I am very excited to have been accepted to Beginning Persian program at the Arabic, Persian and Turkish Language Immersion Institute (APTLII) at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. For two months this summer (June to August) I will be living and learning in a Persian-immersion environment. I will have around 5 hours of formal language classes every day, and then cultural lessons and activities during the evenings. I will be living on campus where I will have to continue speaking my target language with my fellow students outside of the classroom. This will be a challenge, but I sincerely believe that it will be an extremely rewarding experience!
