From efforts towards equal rights for all, protecting the environment and alleviating poverty, now more than ever, we need activists to stand up for what is right.

There will always be easier paths to take, but no path will be more rewarding than the one fighting for these issues.

Grassroots Campaigns is currently hiring progressive students to work on field campaigns on behalf of issue based organizations like Oxfam America, the ACLU, and The Nature Conservancy for our summer offices, with opportunities to stay on longer once the summer is over.

The positions I'm currently hiring for are both canvassers and Field Managers; the pay ranges from $300-$550/wk.

EU summer studies program in Brussels

The EU Studies Summer Program in Brussels offers US students the opportunity to study the emergence of a united Europe in its dynamic heart. Running from July 9 to August 10, the program will consist of two courses plus an EU simulation for a total of 12 quarter credits (or 8 semester credits). The Program is administered by the European Commission-sponsored EU Center of Excellence at the University of Washington (Seattle), and is hosted by the Universite' Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). This five-week program features lectures and seminars by leading experts on the EU from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as site visits to major EU institutions and organizations involved in European integration. In addition, the program is supplemented by cultural and social events in and around the city, as well as a field trip to Luxembourg. Participating students will also receive a three-day Benelux rail pass. Brussels' central location allows students to easily explore the area's rich history and culture at their own pace. The city is famous for its excellent dining, and the program will include two special group dinners. Field trip costs are covered by program fees. Courses & Program
The program includes two courses: "Current EU Policy Debates", taught by Dr. Christine Ingebritsen (Scandinavian Studies Professor, UW), and "EU Institutions: Views from inside the Brussels Complex" taught by Dr. Peter Hobbing (former Principal Administrator, European Commission). In addition, students will participate in a European Union simulation. The two courses are 5 credits each and the EU simulation is 2 credits. Students will be awarded 12 UW credits upon successful completion of the program.

Facilities & Housing
Courses will be held at the Institute for European Studies on the ULB campus. Students will have access to the ULB library and other campus facilities. During the first two days of the program students will be housed at the Sleep Well Youth Hostel in downtown Brussels. Beginning on July 12th students will be accommodated in single-room student dorms in the "Residence Elio Conte" building on the ULB Solbosch campus.

The Elio Conte dorms are located close to the Institute for European Studies (IEE), where the program seminars will be held. The residences provide internet access, private bathrooms and showers, plus a shared kitchen. The dorms are conveniently located near mass transit and are just a short walking distance from numerous restaurants and shops.

Student's dorm accommodation costs are supported by funds from the European Commission through the Seattle EU Center of Excellence's grant.

Eligibility
The program is open to all upper level undergraduate students with an interest in the European Union enrolled in degree programs at US universities. Applicants should submit a program application form, a two-page statement of purpose, and 2 letters of recommendation to the International Programs and exchanges office (IPE) by February 24th, 2012. At least one of the two letters of recommendation must be written by a faculty member at your institution. A second letter can be written by a TA, or supervisor, provided they can comment upon your academic abilities, and on how you can contribute to, and benefit from, a study abroad program. The center may conduct interviews as part of the selections process and will notify all candidates of the program's decisions in writing.

Please note: To be considered for this program students are also required to send copies of their transcripts, by the application deadline, to the EU Center of Excellence at the address listed below. University of Washington students can submit unofficial transcripts. Students from other institutions should submit official copies of their transcripts.

Program Costs
The program fee for 2011 is $2,875. The program fee includes instructional costs, the Benelux tour-rail pass, program trips & events. The program fee does not include airfare, meals, textbooks, personal expenses or the fees charged by IPE: $275 for UW students or $475 for non-UW students.

Financial Aid & Grants
Grant funding is available on a competitive basis to students on this program. UW students are eligible to apply for the quarterly International Programs & Exchanges (IPE) scholarship. Non-UW students may also qualify for funding from their home institution.

For the eighth consecutive year, the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Council Office, in cooperation with the University of Washington Tacoma’s (UWT) Urban Studies Program, will offer free public sessions of the Government Leadership Institute on Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the UWT campus, Keystone Building Auditorium, 1900 Commerce St. No registration is required.

The purpose of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for the general public and students to share time in the classroom and educate each other about the impacts of various municipalities on the development of the city. The sessions will also provide an opportunity for those attending to think critically and creatively about urban politics and policy in Tacoma, and to open dialog with local public officials and other decision makers about the present and future conditions of the city.

Dear Colleagues,
As some of you know by now, for the last few years, students have been clamoring for a course in Arabic. They started a Facebook page and have been asking the Administration to institute such a course which I’m sure will eventually happen with the further development of the Middle-East Studies Program.

Many of these students were and are part of the Language House Program and the Freshmen Language & Culture House (FLAC). So I have worked with them for over a year now on this matter. I also approached Kris, and I’m pleased to report that she agreed to provide funds to do what was done several years ago in the FLAC program: Offer a non-credit introduction to Arabic course.

It turns out that the spouse of our new colleague in Religion (Matthew Ingalls) is a native from Egypt and has taught such a course in the summer session at Yale. Yasmine Khattab will be teaching this non-credit course in the spring on Tue/Thu from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Please refer any student who might be interested to me.

The Washington, D.C. and the Mercer Island District Offices of Congressman Dave Reichert are excited to announce that we are accepting internship applications for the spring. Interns are an integral part of our office, working on the front lines of constituent services.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge on the inner workings of the federal government. Hi Prof. O'Neil,

Happy New Year! Thank you for forwarding our internship information to
students and your colleagues last year. To give you the quick update,
in the fall 160 students went through our training program. Interns
across the country have organized events on their campuses from canned
food drives to support local food banks to collecting hundreds of
petitions to get National Geographic to clean up its paper mill to
preparing to registering students to vote in 2012. Maggie Allen from
Whitman College recruited 14 students and organized an event where she
and her volunteers canvassed local neighborhoods about sustainability
and distributed CFL lightbulbs to 55 households.

Due to increased interest and the success from in the fall we've
decided to hire more interns for our spring engagement internships.
Students go through a 5-week training program to learn how to organize
a campaign on campus and engage their peers on issues that matter to
them. The deadline to apply for the first spring session is Wednesday,
Feb. 1.

Who is Eligible for the APSA Ralph Bunche Program?

The program targets students from racial/ethnic groups that are significantly underrepresented in science in the United States, e.g. African American, Latino/a, Native American, and Pacific Island students. All students who are members of these groups, or who are interested in broadening participation in political science by students from underrepresented minority populations and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting under-represented groups, are eligible to apply. Applicants must be:

Completing their junior year of undergraduate study.
Majoring in political science or a related discipline.
Have an interest in attending graduate school in political science.

Participants in the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute are drawn from a competitive national applicant pool. Candidates should have an interest in the legislative process and civic service, possess excellent writing and communication skills, and work well as part of a team.

Interns in the District Office have an opportunity to work in community outreach, constituent services and drafting policy and issue updates. This includes working with caseworkers to help constituents with issues relating to immigration, military and government agencies, among others. Depending on interests, interns also have an opportunity to participate in community outreach, attending meetings and events with outreach staff and Congressman Smith and assisting with town hall meetings.

Other intern duties are administrative: assisting staff with answering phones, data entry, scanning/copying and other tasks as needed. The Hertog Program is designed to allow exceptional students a rigorous look at the theory and practice of politics. In the heart of the nation's capital, on the campus of George Washington University, Hertog Fellows study classic trexts in political thought such as Plato's Republic, Machiavelli's Prince, and some of the seminal documents of American politics with an outstanding faculty. In addition, students study selected public policy issues with some of those who helped formulate and implement those policies.

The 2012 Hertog Program will have two parts each consisting of three sections of 15 students each:

1) The Hertog Summer Seminar is a full-scholarship, six-week program in the theory and practice of politics. In addition to the study mentioned above, students will hear from approximately 20 outside speaker from the world of political affairs- public officials, public policy analysts, and writers on politics and policy. Our speakers will include Bill Kristol, Juan Williams, David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer. The Summer Seminar will begin June 11th and end July 20th. All students admitted will receive a full scholarship and a $3,000 stipend.

2) The Hertog Summer Fellowship is a new, two-week, full-scholarship program focusing on a single topic in political thought or area of public policy. While the Sumnmer Seminar program is designed for all undergraduateas, the Summer Fellowship is open to upper-level undergraduates and recent college geraduates. For 2012, our there se3ctions weill be devoted to foreign policy, democratice capitalism, and the futer of the welfare state, and tocqueville's Democracy in America. The Summer Fellowship will begin on July 23rd and end on August 3rd and each sutudent admitted will receive a full scholarship and a $1,000 stipend.

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the world's largest archive of digital social science data, is now accepting applications for its annual summer internship program. ICPSR is a unit within the institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. ICPSR's data are the foundation for thousands of research articles, reports, and books. Findings from these data are put to use by scholars, policy analysts, policy makers, the media, and the public.

Interns spend ten weekds from June 4- August 10, 2012, at ICPSR (Ann Arbor, Michigan), during which they will:

Work in small groups and with faculty mentors to complete research projects resulting in conference-ready posters
Gain experience using statistical programs such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata to check data, working in both UNIX and Windows environments

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A teenager who was one of three American college students arrested during massive protests in Cairo is an idealist who got caught up in the pro-democracy movement sweeping Egypt, his mother said Tuesday.

Derrik Sweeney, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Mo., was arrested along with Luke Gates, a 21-year-old Indiana University student from Bloomington, Ind., and Gregory Porter, a 19-year-old Drexel University student from Glenside, Pa.

An Egyptian official said the students were arrested on the roof of a university building where they were throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters near Tahrir Square....

...Sweeney's mother, Joy Sweeney, described him as a principled person who stands up for his beliefs. He attended previous protests but stopped after a demonstration where dozens were killed, she said. He had assured his family the violence wasn't near him and he was safe.

Still, Joy Sweeney said she wasn't surprised he went.

"He got caught up in the whole college-change-the-world mentality, and he believes in democracy strongly," she said.

But she also said her son was the family peacemaker when siblings fought and she couldn't see him acting violently.

"I don't believe that he would intentionally throw a bomb at anyone," she said. "I don't believe that."

The topic of this call is female entrepreneurship in Afghanistan, and the speaker will be Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, CFR's fellow and deputy director of the Women and Foreign Policy program.

Prior to joining CFR, Ms. Lemmon covered public policy and emerging markets for the global investment firm PIMCO, after working for nearly a decade as a journalist and producer with the ABC News political unit and "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Her first book, "The Dressmaker of Khair Khana," a New York Times bestseller, tells the true story of a young Afghan entrepreneur whose business created jobs and hope for the women in her Kabul neighborhood during the Taliban years. Summer Workshop for Slavic and Central Asian Languages

Intensive language training has been offered at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since 1950. The Summer Workshop provides up to 200 participants in Slavic, East European, and Central Asian languages the opportunity to complete a full year of college language instruction during an eight-week summer session.

Utilizing the resources of Indiana University's own specialists as well as native speakers from other universities and abroad, the Summer Workshop has developed and maintained a national program of the highest quality. Announced by Secretary Clinton at the 2009 New York University commencement speech, the Virtual Student Foreign Service is part of a growing effort by the State Department to harness technology and a commitment to global service among young people to facilitate new forms of diplomatic engagement. Working from college and university campuses in the United States and throughout the world, eInterns (American students working virtually) are partnered with our U.S. diplomatic posts overseas and State Department domestic offices to conduct digital diplomacy that reflects the realities of our networked world. This introductory video provides an overview of the VSFS program.

Program Details

VSFS eIntern duties and responsibilities will vary according to the location and needs of each diplomatic post overseas or State Department domestic office and VSFS projects identified. VSFS projects may be research based, contributing to reports on issues such as human rights, economics or the environment. They may also be more technology oriented, such as working on web pages, or helping produce electronic journals. Selected students are expected to work virtually on an average of 5-10 hours per week on VSFS eInternship projects. Students apply in the summer and if selected, begin the eInternship that fall lasting through spring. Most work and projects are internet-based and some have language requirements. Past projects asked students to:

Develop and implement a public relations campaign using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, etc. to communicate and reach out to youth
Conduct research on the economic situation, prepare graphic representations of economic data, and prepare informational material for the U.S. Embassy website
Create a system to gather and analyze media coverage on a set of topics including environment, health, and trade

The application period for the 2011-2012 VSFS eInternship program has closed. Interested U.S. citizen undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate students will be able to apply to the next round of VSFS eInternships in the summer of 2012 for positions to work virtually with State Department domestic offices and U.S. diplomatic posts overseas during the fall 2012 through spring 2013 academic year. As part of the application package, students must submit an official or unofficial transcript and a resume. Applicants will see all available positions and can select up to three projects to which to apply. U.S. citizen students studying abroad or attending foreign universities are welcome to apply.

Funding for Post-Study Abroad Research: APPLY by November 15

Apply to the Bill Campbell Fund of Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society for research funding or continued study

The Campbell Fund funds research for one or two Puget Sound students who are studying abroad. The purpose of the grant is to give students a chance to extend the period of their study abroad program in order to complete a special project or course of study. Awards typically range from $500-$1,500. In 2010 two students received scholarships totaling $2100 for research on young Japanese recluses and on open-air markets in France. The application form is attached. It requires a two-page description of the research project and the budget. NASA History Division Spring and Summer 2012 Internships
The NASA History Division is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for spring and summer 2012 internships. The History Division maintains archival materials to answer research questions from NASA personnel, journalists, scholars, students at all levels and others from around the world. The division also edits and publishes several books and monographs each year. It maintains a large number of websites on NASA history.

Students of all majors are welcome to apply. While detailed prior knowledge of the aeronautics and space fields is not necessary, a keen interest and some basic familiarity with these topics are needed. Strong research, writing and editing skills are essential. Experience with computers, especially HTML formatting, is a plus.

Intern projects are flexible. Typical projects include handling a variety of information requests, editing historical manuscripts, doing research and writing biographical sketches, updating and creating websites, and identifying and captioning photos.

Applications for spring 2012 internships are due Oct. 30, 2011. Summer 2012 internship applications are due Feb. 4, 2012.

This Thursday, November 3rd at 5 pm is the second Fall Lecture of the Comparative Sociology Club. Our lecturer is Professor Michale Vincente Perez from UW Seattle. His talk is entitled: Religion and Everyday Nationalism Among Palestinian Refugees in Jordan.

Based on two-years of ethnographic research in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Professor Perez will focus on the politics of everyday nationhood among Palestinian refugees. His talk will examine how Islam and nation combine to form particular ideas about the Palestinian homeland, people, and struggle and how these claims underscore the importance of understanding nationalism in the context of everyday discourse and practices.

The lecture will be at 5 pm in Room 101 of the SUB (the small classroom just behind the main dining area). Professor Perez will speak for ~30 minutes, followed by Q & A and mingling!

As always, stellar refreshments will be provided!

Hi Prof. O'Neil,

Thought I'd send you these two pictures from my DC experience. The first is a picture from the Washington Post of alum Rebecca Bryant and myself. We participated in a Red Cross Event teaching staffers how to perform basic first aid services in the aftermath of Rep. Gabby Giffords being shot. Rep. Adam Smith and Nancy Pelosi were also at the event.

The second is a screen shot of me sitting next to Sec. Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen (former Sec of Defense and Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs respectively) during a congressional hearing after the Libyan airstrikes. I swear I wasn't angry, it was just very early in the AM and I hadn't had my breakfast yet.

You can now say UPS grads and students have appeared on CSPAN, CNN, and the Washington Post.

The Graduate Fellowships Committee is holding an information session next Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 pm in Wyatt 109 on fellowships through Princeton-in-Asia, Princeton-in-Africa, and Princeton-in-Latin America. These fellowships involve either working in development in Latin America or Africa, or else teaching English in Asia, with the possibility of spending a second year working for an NGO in Asia.

Background on the programs:

Princeton-in-Asia is looking for students who are flexible, intellectually curious, and ambitious. They do not need to be at the top of their class, although they should have a gpa at least above a 3.0. Two Puget Sound graduates are currently teaching English with PiA, one in Cambodia and one in Singapore. Their names are Griffin Hotchkiss and Micah Stanovsky, and their blogs are online at http://www.pugetsound.edu/voices

For both positions, we are seeking someone with knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes, familiarity working in a political environment, ability to serve a diverse constituency of hospitals, excellent project development and management skills, and strong communication skills. Data collection, research and analysis skills are required. A bachelor’s degree or related work experience is required. Master’s degree in health services administration, public health, business, or similar degree is preferred. Knowledge or background in health care is preferred. Background in mobilizing people to be engaged in public policy advocacy is preferred. The jobs are full-time, with excellent benefits, and a competitive salary ($72,000-$103,000). New Course for Spring! PG 352 Political Psychology

PG 352 Political Psychology and Deterrence

This course explores how political psychologists explain war and peace in international relations. It begins with an examination of deterrence theory and nuclear strategy. Students then investigate cognitive and motivated biases and their effects on perceptions, beliefs, and decision-making. Finally, students build on these themes in the second half of the course by looking at a handful of key psychological theories that claim to explain foreign policy decision-making. These include analogies, prospect theory, attribution theory, and social identity theory. The learning goals of this course are: to introduce students to central theories in political psychology, use these to explain questions in international relations, and help students evaluate developments in international politics from the news.

Prerequisite: PG 103.
