GAO Internships--great opportunity...!

From an alum--

I hope this email finds you well. I just wanted to reach out and say hello and let you know that GAO is planning to post an unpaid internship announcement for undergraduate students in January. These internships would be available both in DC or in any of our field offices, including Seattle. Students are welcome to intern during the school year (not sure if UPS lets students do this), or during the summer and can be very flexible about hours and start dates. If any students are interested, I'd suggest that they set up a USAJobs account (https://www.usajobs.gov) and upload a resume, and then keep an eye out on USAJobs or the GAO website (www.gao.gov) for the specific announcement. The announcement that UPS students would be eligible for will be for a 'Student Volunteer' position (our "intern" positions are specifically for graduate students and are paid). I'd also be happy to answer any questions anyone has about GAO. They can reach out to me--

Professor O'Neil has the phone and email contact for any interested student.

Match Corps in the News!

Dear Friends of Match Corps,

We hope that your 2014-15 academic year has gotten off to a strong start!  Here at Match, we are already deep into the swing of the college application process for our graduating class, gathering data on our students' first six weeks of learning, and of course, recruiting your soon-to-be-graduates to work with our students next year through the Match Corps.

We're writing to ask that you could forward the article below to any senior you know who may be interested in spending a year in Boston working with inner-city students in a high-performing, high-poverty school.

The article is from Detroit's Bridge Magazine.  It features current high school Corps member and Match Teacher Resident Lindsey Holmes.  Ms. Holmes grew up in Detroit, and graduated from Spelman College in the spring of 2014.  She is training to be high school English teacher, and hopes to open her own school, in Detroit, someday.  You can go directly to the article here.

We are accepting applications for the 2015-16 programs, so we'd really appreciate if you can spread the word to your students who are graduating soon!  The article might be a way to spark their interest. Students can apply here.

If you're not very familiar with the Match Corps and our Teacher Residency option, you can learn more at www.matcheducation.org/match-corps-program.

Sincerely,
Sara Colón & the Match Recruiting Team

Interesting Opportunity for Puget Sound Students

Hello Professor O'Neil,

You may remember me from Methods & Analysis a few years back. I graduated from Puget Sound in 2012 with a degree with Politics, emphasis in Political Theory.  I am now living & working in Ecuador with an organization called Community Enterprise Solutions, which uses microfinance to empower women economically, while simultaneously providing needed technologies (mainly public health related) to rural villages.

During the summer, we also help coordinate Social Entrepreneur Corps (SE Corps), the social enterprise that we partner with. SE Corps is a summer internship opportunity for college aged students to do on the ground work with the MicroConsignment Model that we use.

The students that do SE Corps go out in the field with us to do campaigns for Community Enterprise Solutions, propose business ideas, and help evaluate the effectiveness & reach of our programming. The program is about 8 weeks long, includes intensive Spanish classes at the beginning, and various home stays and projects throughout.

I thought that SE Corps sounded like the perfect opportunity for UPS students, especially those interested in politics/Latin America. I just wanted to pass this along to you!

Please let me know if you have any questions about the program!

Here's a link to the program website & overview about what the program includes: http://www.socialentrepreneurcorps.com/.

The Washington Center Internship and Seminar Opportunities

The Washington Center is the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the country. It brings together exceptional and dedicated college students and civic, governmental and business leaders, hundreds of colleges and universities, scores of public and private host organizations (or internship sites), and over 40,000 alumni. Founded 35 years ago, TWC is a unique educational center based on a fully integrated mix of professional experience, academic coursework and real-life challenges.
TWC’s Mission is Building Future Leaders
Leaders are built from the inside out. They are made, not born. The Washington Center’s program advisors and internship site supervisors work tirelessly to ensure that students get the most out of their internship experience.
The Washington Center believes it is a fundamental civic duty to instill in all program participants the need to be well-informed, public-spirited and socially engaged leaders. TWC’s alumni hold leadership positions in virtually every career field, including law, education, social work, medicine, journalism, diplomacy, business and politics. Several even serve on TWC’s Board of Directors.

Two Core Programs

The Washington Center offers two types of programs:

INTERNSHIPS:
Semester or summer-long integrated academic and work experiences in government, corporations and nonprofit organizations. Each internship is tailored to provide meaningful work experiences that will enhance students’ resumes and help launch their careers. Most internships are in Washington, D.C., but there are also opportunities abroad in London, England and Sydney, Australia. Additionally, students take academic courses and attend special programming during their time at The Washington Center.

ACADEMIC SEMINARS:
These intensive learning experiences focused on specific topics, such as National Security, the Presidency and the Middle East Peace Process. Past seminars have included visits to such locations as Capitol Hill, CNN, the Newseum, embassies and many others. Seminar events have featured such speakers as Ted Koppel, Discovery Channel; Andrea Mitchell, NBC News; Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee; and others.
