PEACE & CONFLICT RESOLUTION STUDIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND BEYOND

With Optional Arabic Study

Peace & Conflict Resolution: 9 June - 13 July 2013

Arabic Language Option: 14 July - 10 August 2013

• A Note from the Faculty: Dr. Paul Arthur and Dr. Zaid Eyadat •

Dear Colleague,
We are excited to update you on our study abroad program in London and Amman exploring the theory and practice of conflict resolution and management and its applicability to intractable conflicts like those in the Middle East and beyond. This program, co-sponsored by the Foundation for International Education and AMIDEAST, divides its time between London and Amman. In the London-based course Life Cycle of Peace and Conflict: Lessons Learned in Northern Ireland we evaluate the literature of the field and concentrate on the case study of Northern Ireland as an exemplar of the life cycle of a conflict through the phases of analysis, negotiation and implementation. We are excited to include a short study tour to Derry and Belfast, Ireland now, as part of this program.
In the Amman-based Conflict Resolution and Management: Beyond The Arab-Israeli Conflict, we explore peace and conflict resolution in the Middle East. Using the framework developed in London, we examine the role of religion and the clash of cultures; the significance of regional organisations in preventing and resolving conflict; the place of civil society and of political leadership; economic assistance as a generator in peace building; and the question (or lack thereof) of gender mainstreaming. We look beyond the Arab-Israeli conflict to other significant regional conflicts involving Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Iran and Syria and to inter-tribal conflict. And, in the process, we conduct a critical enquiry into conflict analysis and resolution. We are very excited to offer the opportunity, to students who wish it, to stay in Amman to do an intensive course in Modern Arabic at the introductory, intermediate, or advanced level.
Grounded in collegiality, reflection and critical analysis, this program of conflict resolution and management will attempt to marry theory and practice by being temporal and spatial, comparative and challenging. Site visits, meetings with leading practitioners in conflict negotiation, meetings with local students, cultural excursions, group discussion and guest lectures will enhance the richness of the experience. We invite your students - and you - to join us in this unique academic exploration.
Our program will provide a rich experience in extracurricular activities, cultural excursions, and in depth analysis of the case studies that will impact participants' understanding of Arab life and culture, with emphasis on local approaches to conflict.

Professor Kadarkay and the Secret Police

For those of you who remember Professor Arpad Kadarkay, he recently forwarded me pictures that were taken of him by the Hungarian secret police in the 1970s when he was in that country doing research.  His pictures are part of a larger exhibition on the Czechoslovak and Hungarian secret services. You can see him on the right in the surveillance picture below.

There is an article in Hungarian on the exhibition here:
you can use Google Translate to get a very rough sense of the content.
There's also a brief summary here in English.

GREAT NEWS! OUR OWN KARL FIELDS NAMED WASHINGTON STATE PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR!

Dear Members of the Campus Community,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Karl Fields has been named Washington Professor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.  Karl will receive the award at a luncheon today in Washington, D.C., followed by an evening congressional reception.

A faculty member in politics and government and director of the Asian Studies Program, Karl was nominated by colleagues, students, and alumni working in locations around the globe (including two intrepid Pac Rim alumni writing on his behalf from the outer slopes of the Himalayas!).

Karl’s outstanding teaching is the result of thorough preparation, honest reflection, and perceptive evolution over more than twenty years.  A teacher-scholar of East Asian political economy, Karl is widely recognized as inspiring in his mastery of content and pedagogy, infectiously curious in learning and sharing knowledge, and selfless in his support of his students.  The joy he takes in teaching radiates in his classrooms, whether here on campus or in his work abroad.

The U.S. Professors of the Year program is the only national program to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.  Since the program’s inception in 1985, Puget Sound faculty members have received more Washington Professor of the Year honors than any other faculty.  Karl joins an outstanding group of other Puget Sound colleagues so honored, including Mike Veseth (2010), Jim Evans (2008), Nancy Bristow (2007), Suzanne Barnett (2002), Mott Greene (1996) and Bob Albertson (1985).

Puget Sound was recently honored as a “College That Changes Lives.”  Nowhere is this more evident than in the deep commitment to teaching embodied by our faculty.  Please join us in congratulating Karl on this significant and well-deserved honor. Additional information about Karl and the award can be found on the news section of our website

Intersections is one of five new residential programs being offered for juniors and seniors who want to live in the new residence hall scheduled to open for Fall 2013.  Intersections is focused on exploring connections and tensions between social justice issues and students’ academic, social, and/or personal engagement with issues of spirituality, religious pluralism, and emerging spiritualties.  Our specific foci for 2013-2014 will be related to (but not limited to) issues of immigration, incarceration, and food.  Students admitted into Intersections will be able to live in a community that encourages and supports exploring these themes as both scholars and activists.  Intersections is directed by Dave Wright ’96, Director of Spirituality, Service, & Social Justice at the University of Puget Sound, in partnership with faculty colleagues Robin Jacobson (Politics and Government) and Stuart Smithers (Religion) – and other faculty and staff who will participate in this program in a variety of ways! Whip Hoyer, House Democratic Caucuses Announce the Launch of House Democrats’ First Online Resume Bank

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD), the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), the Blue Dog Coalition, the New Democrat Coalition, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) announced jointly today that they have launched a new resume bank at democraticwhip.gov/resumes where members of the public can submit resumes that will be viewable by all new and existing House Democratic offices. For the large freshman class of Democrats that will be joining the 113th Congress, this will be a useful tool as they set up their offices and hire staff members.
"The resume bank launched today will allow House Democrats to improve our hiring process and further strengthen our staff diversity," said House Democratic Whip Hoyer. "It advances our commitment to openness, transparency, and equal opportunity by creating a new way for any citizen to submit a resume that will be shared with all House Democratic offices, including the large incoming freshmen class. We are excited to launch this new, unprecedented process, which we believe will be an invaluable resource to our Members as they prepare for the 113th Congress, and for applicants looking for a job on Capitol Hill."
Members of the public can go online to http://democraticwhip.gov/resumes where they can fill out a form and upload a copy of their resume. That information will then be posted in a searchable, sortable resume bank on DemCom, the official intranet for House Democratic staff. Democratic offices will be able to browse candidates for open positions, and DemCom users will be able to recommend, endorse, or comment on submissions in the resume bank, either in their personal capacity, or on behalf of their office.
Democratic Whip Hoyer's office manages DemCom, which has been in use for four years and is used regularly by over 2,000 House Democratic staffers. DemCom hosts all internal documents within the Democratic Caucus including "Dear Colleague" Member letters, Leadership fact sheets and talking points, organization position papers, and public sentiment from POPVOX.com, all organized by specific legislation.
Visit http://www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.

Match Corps Post-Graduate Service Programs

From: Elizabeth Owens <elizabeth.owens@matcheducation.org>
Date: Fri, Oct 26, 2012 at 6:23 AM
Subject: Hello Again from Match Education
To: Patrick H O'Neil <poneil@pugetsound.edu>

Dear Professor O'Neil,

I’d like to thank you again for sharing the Match Corps Opportunity with the students and faculty in your department last year. We truly appreciate you taking the time to spread the word about the Match Corps and Match Teacher Residency post-graduate service programs. This year, we’ve expanded our reach to serve both Boston and Lawrence, MA. To learn more about how Match Education has expanded and what opportunities are available for recent college graduates, have a look at our website:http://www.matcheducation.org/apply.

As a reminder, candidates for the Match Corps or Teacher Residency usually fall into one of these categories:

1)      Want to be highly effective educators in urban schools
2)      Want to volunteer for a year before grad school, law school, or medical school
3)      Want to get involved in education reform or public policy
4)      Want to transition into a career in the non-profit or education sector

ATTENTION SENIORS – do you:

a)      Want to be a highly effective educator in urban schools?
b)      Want to volunteer for a year before grad school, law school, or medical school?
c)       Want to get involved in education reform or public policy?
d)      Want to transition into a career in the non-profit or education sector?

If so, consider committing a year to the Match Corps, a one-year urban education service fellowship. Corps members volunteer full-time in one of our charter schools in Boston, or in a traditional district school in Lawrence with whom we have partnered, tutoring and mentoring a small caseload of students. We also offer the Match Teacher Residency, so that in addition to tutoring full-time, Corps members can train and earn certification to become full-time teachers in other high-need urban schools.

We recruit from all majors; candidates do not need to have a background in education. We seek candidates with strong content backgrounds – math, science, English, history, etc, and those who share our passion for social justice and education reform.

All of the details about our programs can be found herehttp://www.matcheducation.org/apply

U.S. PIRG opportunity for graduating seniors!

Hello Professor Sousa,
My name is MacKenzie Fuentes and I graduated from UPS in 2011 through the Comparative Sociology and Gender Studies departments. I am now the Program Associate for WashPIRG (Washington Public Interest Research Group), a state member of U.S. PIRG.
I have a job opportunity for this year's graduating seniors that I would love to share with the students in your department. U.S. PIRG is recruiting for two entry-level positions available nationwide: our 1-year Campus Organizing position, and our 2-year Fellowship Program (full descriptions attached).
After years of recruiting on campuses, our recruiters have found that many of the students interested in our political advocacy and organizing work do not use their campus career center as a resource. As a result, I am reaching out to your department directly to find students who are passionate about social change.
Can you forward these job postings to students through a department list-serv?
Thank you,
MacKenzie Fuentes

U.S. PIRG, the federation of state Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), stands up to powerful special interests on behalf of the American public. With a strong network of researchers, advocates, organizers, and students in state capitals across the country, we take on special interests on issues such as product safety, public health, political corruption, tax and budget reform, and consumer protection where these interests stand in the way of reform and progress.

Detention Center Court Watch Group- Interest Meeting on Wednesday! 11/7/12

Interested in immigration law? Civil liberties? Social justice? Come to the Detention Center Court Watch Group interest meeting! Wednesday at 6pm in Wyatt 101. Puget Sound's Detention Center Court Watch Group will be working with the Immigrant Detainee Justice Project, Seattle University's School of Law, and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), to sit in on court proceedings at the Detention Center. Our main goal is to take notes on court proceedings that will help NWIRP to better serve immigrant detainees. About 90% of immigrants facing deportation represent themselves in court, and because they are not citizens they are not entitled to a lawyer. NWIRP works with people facing deportation and gives them guidance as they navigate the court system. In addition to taking notes, we are hoping to learn about immigration law first-hand as well as being a presence of support for those facing deportation. Those interested will receive training on campus to prepare them for participation in the program. We are planning to begin regular visits to the detention center in January, probably sending a few members at a time on a regular basis. Patricia Sully, Assistant Director of Seattle University's Access to Justice Institute will be speaking at the interest meeting to give us more detail on the program. Hope to see you there!
